What it means
ICM field guidance: hiring for lived experience does not transfer the cost of emotional exposure to the worker alone. Programs should ask what supervision, time off, confidential care, and backup are available when work brings past and present harm close.
Those supports are organizational responsibilities. Do not assume that every worker has the same history or needs the same care.

Here is an example to work through. The linked source explains the idea or guest account. The next move is ICM guidance.
- Where it shows up
- A job description values lived experience but the employer offers no backup after critical incidents.
- A useful move
- Ask workers what support is usable, budget supervision and confidential care, and name who covers participant relationships when someone needs rest.
- What this does not prove
- Do not assume a worker's history, clinical needs, or capacity from a credential or job title.
